For as long as I can remember, the place I would find the highest quality movie trailers was on Apple’s website. A large collection and searchable library of movie trailers were available at http://trailers.apple.com and made it so you could quickly and easily watch high quality trailers of the movies in the box office.

Apple was one of the first sites to offer HD trailers that were streamed through their Quicktime application to users. Today, Quicktime is still used, but HTML5 is also another option for viewing movie trailers served by Apple. Fiber Optic services like Verizon Fios makes HD video sites, like Apple’s Trailer site, an amazing experience.

In the early days of HD trailers, you’d start the process and come back 20 minutes later to actually watch the trailer. With increased bandwidth comes increased happiness as now watching a full trailer in HD quality from Apple.com is just a click away.

Find Movie Show Times At Apple.com

Apple added a feature recently to their trailer website that made it easier for site visitors to find when and where the movies the trailers featured were playing. This new feature makes it so you have 1 less website to go to once you identify a movie that looks interesting to you. It being late and on a Friday night, I went to check the latest movie trailers to see if anything caught my eye. Now, I can quickly and easily see when and where The American is playing around me.

I must admit that The American trailer has caught my attention, and I’m not a George Clooney fan at all. I am however an assassin movie fan and thanks to the Find Showtimes feature on the Apple Trailer webpage for the movie I can easily see that I’ve already missed the last showing of the movie for the night. I guess it will have to wait until tomorrow.

To check the showtime listings for movies like The American, click the “Find Showtimes” button on the page and enter your zip code. A map will display showing the closest theaters and the times the movie is playing in your area.

Introducing Ping – Apple’s Music Social Network

Apple’s announcement today was a lot about the new hardware they were offering for this holiday season. Apple makes a killing every year over the Winter Holiday season as it seems there is nothing better than an iPod for a gift. They’ve refreshed their models and included an updated AppleTV designed to take advantage of the streaming capabilities and media recorded on your iPhones, iPods, and iPads.

But, Apple also announced an update to their popular iTunes applications. iTunes 10, which is now available for download from Apple’s website, is everything we’ve grown to love from iTunes with a new integrated social media service that Apple has named Ping.

How To Setup Ping in iTunes 10

Apple seems to have seen the popularity and success of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and realized that they must be able to make a similar service to help connect people around music. Facebook had tried, and failed a number of times, but their weakness maybe that users weren’t connected easily to their music library and tastes. Apple has a huge advantage in this area and figures they’ll capitalize on it.

At its core, Ping appears to be a social tool that will help us find music easier. Or in other words, it will help Apple sell more music through its store. I know that the way that I identify new music is by being introduced to it from friends and family. Rarely do I find myself quickly interested in music provided over the radio, but I always give chance to music my friends and family are listening to. Ping understands this and hopes to make it easier for me to see what those closest to me are interested in.

Setting up Ping is quick and easy. To Setup Apple’s Ping through iTunes:

Download iTunes 10 and install it on your computer
After installing you should see Ping under Store on your left navigation pane in iTunes 10.
Select it to start the Ping Setup process. You should see a screen inviting you to Turn On Ping. Click the button to get started

After clicking the Turn On Ping button you’ll be asked to enter some information about yourself. Select a photo, which takes advantage of all the Photo Booth Effects on your mac. Take and select your picture to add it to your Ping profile.

Next, select your privacy settings and get ready to start enjoying connections to your favorite artists, friends, and family

After you’ve setup Ping you’ll be able to communicate with friends and family as well as connect with your Facebook Friends who have already setup their Ping accounts. It’ll be interesting to see how many iTunes users fill out and create Ping profiles. Apple faces the difficulty of keeping their social network alive, and to do so they’ll need active participants. Lucky for them, over 160 million people already have iTunes, so even if half the individuals create accounts they’ll be off to a great start.

Easy Music Purchases

Ping is the most significant update since the original release of iTunes in terms of enticing users to purchase more music. Genius and other recommendation services were their first efforts, but a computer is limited in its ability to convince someone to try a new song. If that same recommendation looks like its coming from a friend, then I’m a lot more likely to give it a shot. Apple understands this, and Ping is their way of keeping me interested in new music, and plenty of it.

With that in mind, you’ll see that many of the links on each Ping page is to a sample and test page where I can listen to a snippet of music and purchase it with one click. I can only imagine how many songs will sell in the coming months.

Ping Privacy Settings

It seems that Apple has been playing close attention to the privacy discussion on social network sites like Facebook. After Facebook faced significant backlash for their privacy settings, Apple is doing everything they can to avoid a similar difficult situation. Steve Jobs even stressed the simplicity of the privacy settings and configuration for the new iTunes feature. Apple learned with their iPhone Antenna issues that negative press needs to be taken seriously.

Overall, the Ping privacy settings are simple to configure and understand. I expect that Apple will do its best to keep it this way. I want to connect with friends and family, but I want to know how I’m connecting with them and what I’m sharing.

Conclusion

Overall, iTunes 10 is a solid update. The verdict is still out on Ping but Apple has done an excellent job at making it quick and easy to create an account. If its this easy to share my music interests over the platform, then I’m sure only big things will come from Apple’s network. Especially if individuals are making purchases based on what they see through the network.

With Safari 5, Apple has finally implemented a feature that users of other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome have enjoyed for years: extensions. These seemingly innocuous little add-ons can vastly improve your web browsing experience, whether you’re simply a casual surfer or a power-user, and once you’ve installed certain extensions, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without them.

Apple’s Safari Extensions Gallery isn’t bursting at the seams just yet, but it does already feature a selection of extensions that we couldn’t surf without, and we’ve highlighted six of our top picks below.

1. AdBlock

Finally bringing the ability to block those annoying and invasive banner ads that are apparently designed to disrupt your browsing enjoyment, AdBlock should be the first Safari extension on everyones list. Firefox and Chrome users have enjoyed this functionality for what seems like aeons, and now thankfully Safari surfers can join the ad-free party as well.

2. GMail Counter

Watch College Football On Your Mac

As anticipation for a potential iTV continues to build as we await Apple’s official announcement on September 1st, we wanted to take a closer look at what upcoming television and interests are already available to Mac owners. There are few things on american television that are watched more than College Football. Saturday’s are filled with interested fans watching football match-ups from schools across the country. And like most television, College Football has found its way to the internet and the Mac.

Watch College Football on ESPN3

ESPN 3, ESPN’s newly branded website that was formerly known as ESPN360.com, will broadcast 20 NCAA Division 1 college football games this year. Mac owners will be able to few these games by navigating their Safari or other web browser to ESPN3.com and clicking through to the game in progress. A complete schedule of games that will be broadcasted on ESPN3.com this year is already available online.

Virginia Tech fans will be finding themselves glued to their computers more than other college fans, as the Hokies will be broadcast 3 times on the ESPN online network. If VA Tech can win throughout the season and keep their high ranking, ESPN3.com will receive a considerable amount of use as more and more fans will be interested in the games being broadcasted on the network.

Most of the games scheduled this year will feature larger schools from BCS conferences playing smaller schools. It will be interesting to see if the trend to online broadcasts continue over the next few years. If so, we can expect to see more and more important games brought to our Mac screens.

Connect Your Mac To your TV

If you’re wondering how to watch these online games with friends and family on your new HD big screen television, then you’re in luck. Apple computers easily connect to most HDTVs through either VGA or HDMI adapters that connect to the video out ports on your Macbook or latest iMacs. Mac Mini’s even include a built in HDMI port to allow you to easily use your HDTV as a monitor and broadcast the games streamed to you over ESPN3.com and the internet.

If you don’t have a Mac MIni, you’ll want to be sure to have an HDMI adapter for your Mac so you can easily connect it to your HDTV. After connecting the adapter to your Mac, you’ll be able to use an HDMI cable to connect your computer to your HD television. Retrieving Missing Voicemail Messages on Your iPhone

How many times has someone ever told you “Hey, did you get my message?” And you respond “What message?” And they say “The message I sent you 2 days ago.” If you are like me, I never got the message. Whether this is AT&T’s fault or Apple’s fault, I really don’t care. I just hate when I don’t get a voicemail and people think I didn’t respond to them and that I am ignoring them. Well, this post is all about getting those voice mails back onto your iPhone.

How To Restore Messages to Visual Voicemail on your iPhone

To retrieve visual voicemail message on your phone you’ll need to follow these steps:

First, hit the “Settings” icon, and then the “general” tab on your iPhone

Next, scroll all the way down to the bottom and hit the “reset” key

After this you will see a menu of things that you can reset. You are going to want to click on the “Reset Network Settings”. You will then be asked if this is really what you want to do and you hit it again to reset your network and allow it to retrieve missing voicemail messages.

The steps listed above will now restart your iPhone and from here you should now see all of your visual voicemails, including those that you did not original receive. If for some reason this does not work, repeat all the steps, but instead of hitting “Reset Network Settings”, choose “Reset All Settings.” This should get it to work.

If for some reason the extra step listed above also doesn’t work, then you may want to go ahead and either call AT&T or Apple to see if there is something wrong with your iPhone. There could be a problem with the phone or the software that could be interfering with the way that the device receives notices of voicemails. However, hopefully with the steps described above you’ll be able to retrieve the messages left for you and you won’t be “accidentally” blowing off your friends, family members, and co-workers.

Google Voice comes to Gmail

As you may have noticed Google has really been stepping up their game the past couple of months or so and came out with another cool feature today. Google Voice for those of you that don’t know has been around for a little while. For me personally, there was no real advantage to Google Voice as all it did was give me another phone number and a place to check my voicemails online. What I really wanted from it was for it to be somewhat similar to Skype, but with Google’s magic, be better than Skype. Well, today, Google may have taken a step in that direction.

This morning Google introduced Google Voice integrated into Gmail. Basically, to make this very easy to explain, it is basically Skype in a web browser. The advantage to this is that you can take advantage of Google Voice from any browser and you are not limited to an app that you have to download to your computer like Skype.

When you look at the left hand column in your Gmail you will see your Chat box and you will see a “Call Phone” button. When you press this button you will see the dialer that you see above. From here you can press the phone number of the person you want to call or start typing in their name and if you have added this person’s phone number to your Gmail contacts then their phone number will show up as well. If you don’t have your Address Book contacts synced with your Gmail Contacts, hre is a post to get your Address Book contacts to sync with your Google contacts.

Overall the call quality was pretty decent for VOIP. For right now calls to and from anyone in the United States is free and there is a small fee for other countries. This is great news for people here in the US as now I can call other people in the US for free and not use my cell phone minutes. This is what really separates Google Voice and Skype.

With Skype you are limited to only calling other Skype users for free. Google says they are doing this for at least the rest of the year. Here is to hoping and praying that it stays this way. I would gladly see ads in my Google Voice if they are willing to let us call anyone in the US for free. In fact if Google were to keep this the way it is, I would suspect it would definitely put a dent in home phone sales. Google has a lot of potential in this area and I hope they are able to stick with it and offer a great product.

Disable iAds on your iOS 4 Device

When Apple introduced the new iOS 4 one of the big things that was introduced was iAds. These were going to be sweet looking ads from within apps. The ads were not going to take you out of the app, but run inside of the app. It was the future of advertising for app developers. When the new OS came out, you didn’t see many iAds, but now they are starting to crop up more and more.

Personally, I really don’t mind the ads. Some of them are done well, some of them could use some work. But, for me, if it means that a developer puts iAd’s into their app so they can make their app free, I am all for it. At the same time, I do know there are people who don’t like ads period and don’t want them. Well, this quick tip is all about disabling iAds, to a degree.

What you have to do is grab your iOS 4 device like an iPhone, iPod Touch, and soon an iPad and go to the following address http://oo.apple.com. Again, this will only work on an iOS 4 device, so if you try this on your computer, it will not work. Another thing to keep in mind is that when you are taken to this site, it will automatically opt you out. So if you don’t want to be opted out, then don’t go to the address. When you do go to the address, you should see something like the picture below.

Now, you have to be careful here and read the fine print on the site. Apple says that you have opted out, but you have not necessarily opted out of iAds all together. Apple wouldn’t be that dumb. You will just now see less ads that are relevant to your interests. If you want to do this for all your iOS devices, you have to do it individually on each device.

So why do this? Well, a couple of reasons. One, if you don’t like ads, then this will lessen them. Two, Apple collects information off your device to help tailor the ads according to your interests. If you don’t want Apple snooping around too much then this would be a good thing to do.

There is no doubt that the iPhone 4 is one of the most impressive smart phones on the market. Its new hardware and improved software make the device a must have for many. But, while many focus on the positives of the iPhone 4, others are disappointed with what you can’t do with the device out of the box. There is a solution to help users get all the functionality out of their iPhone 4 and now that its officially legal, there is only the threat of a voided warranty keeping some from adding features to their iPhone.

To make the decision a bit easier for you, and to help you make the jump to a more “open” iPhone, we’ve provided a small list of features below that allow you to add functionality to your iPhone. If you haven’t already jailbroken your iPhone or updated to version 4.0.2, you’ll need to do so in order to take advantage of the features detailed in this article.

1. Tether – Your iPhone Keeps You Connected

After you’ve jailbroken your iPhone, you’ll be able to easily add new applications through services like Cydia or Rock. After you’ve installed these applications you’ll be able to use them to download for trials or purchase apps like Tether. Tether does just what it says, it allows you to tether your 3G internet connection on your iPhone to your computer so you can browse the web where ever you go.

It is true that you can enable this feature through AT&T without jailbreaking your iPhone, but for much less than the price of what AT&T would charge you each month, you can tether your iPhone for as long as you keep your iPhone Jailbroken. The App is simple to use and your Mac knows just what to do when its connected to your computer via a USB cable. The price of this app alone and its great functionality is worth a jailbreak to many iPhone owners.

2. MyWi – Turn Your iPhone Into a WiFi HotSpot

If you’re looking for the features of Tether, but want to share that connection with multiple computers where ever you go, then MyWi is just the app for you. After installation and a few configuration steps, you’ll be able to quickly turn your iPhone into a mobile WiFi Hotspot that shares your 3G connection. I found myself extremely thankful for this app during my last vacation to the beach.

After a short thunderstorm knocked out the internet at our beach house, we were able to quickly connect to the internet through the MyWi app on my jailbroken iPhone. This feature has been one that has really encouraged me to keep my phone jailbroken. I’m not sure why its not part of AT&T tethering options.

3. Enhanced Interface & Services

Another benefit of jailbreaking your phone is adding interface gestures. With various apps available through Cydia and Rock you can add functionality like swiping the top status bar to quickly display important settings and options like turning on and off wifi, bluetooth, 3G, and other functionality on the phone. iOS 4 added a lot to the mobile interface with folders and multiprocessing features, but it missed out on the opportunity to take advantage of additional possibilities.

4. Emulators & Games

With a jailbroken iPhone, your phone can quickly become a Nintendo Entertainment System, a SNES, Sega Gensis, and many other classic gaming platforms. Combine your phone with a Wii remote and you’ll have an enjoyable entertainment system with classic games from your childhood in your pocket. There is a lot to say about the ability to play Mario Kart, or Zelda while you wait in line for movie tickets, a concert, or a sporting event.

5. My3G – Trick Your iPhone Apps

We’re not completely sure if its due to potential poor user experience or AT&Ts network, but there are a number of applications that don’t have complete functionality when you’re connected to the internet through 3G. That all changes with My3G that is available on your jailbroken iPhone. My3G makes it so your apps think you’re on a wifi network when you’re not. Thus you’ll be able to use features like facetime when you’re on 3G and not connected to a Wireless network.

If you want a completely functional phone no matter how you’re connected to the internet, then a jailbroken iPhone and My3G is just what you need.

6. IntelliScreen – Enhance Your Lock Screen

Another feature that many iPhone owners wish came standard on their iOS device is the ability for more information on your Lock Screen. With IntelliScreen, you can enhance your lock screen and add widgets like the weather, calendar events, unread email messages, and a complete list of the last SMS messages you’ve received.

You can enjoy all of these information services without sliding to unlock your phone. But be careful, you’d hate for your emails to be read by people that may happen to pick up your phone and check things out without your knowing.

Conclusion

Above are just a few reasons you may want to jailbreak your iPhone 4. If you haven’t upgraded to iOS 4.0.2 and you’d like to enable the features described above then jailbreak the phone and get started. Don’t worry, you can always restore your jailbroken iPhone to factory settings.

iOS 4.0.2 users will have to wait until the next jailbreak options becomes available. It shouldn’t be too long before the hacker community finds a way to open up your version of your iPhone.

I absolutely hated it. Until now, there was no really easy way to deal with this. Just a couple of weeks ago Google finally has given users the option of having multiple account sign-in. Here is a tutorial on how to do this.

The first thing you are going to want to do is go to your Google Accounts Page on Safari, Google Chrome for Mac, or Firefox. Here you should log in, if you are not already automatically logged in. One thing to note here before we go any further is that you cannot sign in to multiple Google Apps accounts, only regular Google accounts. For example, I have a Google Apps account through my work, but I cannot sign in to that account at the same time I am in my personal Gmail account. This would be a nice feature to have and I hope Google adds this later on in the future.

Once you have signed into your Google accounts, you are going to want to click on “Edit” next to the “Multiple Sign-in”.

On your account, it will automatically be switched to “off” instead of mine being “on”. You will then be taken to a page to setup your multiple sign in. Here you will have to turn multiple sign-in’s “on” and check that you agree to the stipulations that Google puts forth about not being able to always access all of Google services while you have the multiple sign-in on.

Once this is done, you now sign into a different account. All you have to do is click on the arrow that is next to your current email address on the top right corner and sign in as a different user. Once this is done, you will now be able to easily switch back and forth between each sign-in without having to log in all the time.

This is a welcome addition to Google. I don’t know how many people have multiple accounts, but nonetheless it is a nice feature to have. What would be cool to see is if you could some how merge multiple accounts at some point, kind of like what you can do on the iPhone with multiple email accounts all in one place.
