Sync Your Facebook Friends With iPhone Contacts

by Dan

The Facebook App for the iPhone has continually seen improvements over the past year that have allowed us to keep up with the latest happenings with our friends and family as they post their information out to the world.

Just recently Facebook updated their app again, making it even easier for us to keep in contact with our friends. The latest iPhone Facebook App updates include the ability to sync our contacts in our iPhone Address Book with phone, website, email, and other information our Friends provide to Facebook. In the past we described a way to add your Facebook friends to Address Book and we wanted to now bring you the latest and greatest way to keep Facebook and your iPhone Contacts in sync.

To sync your Facebook Friends with your iPhone Contacts:

  • Be sure to download the latest version of the iPhone App from the Apps Store, without it you will not be able to sync your Facebook Contacts
  • After your app is updated, Open Facebook on your iPhone. For me, the App appeared and asked right away if I wanted to sync my Facebook contacts with my iPhone contacts, but in case you skipped this message we’ll provide you with the rest of the steps
  • From the Facebook Landing page click the Friends button
  • Facebook1.jpg
  • Next, Click the Sync button in the top right corner
  • Facebook2.jpg
  • On the next screen slide to Yes the Syncing option, and if you’d like to pull in the profile pictures from Facebook, slide to Yes the Replace Photos option
  • Facebook3.jpg
  • Accept the agreement screen that displays to allow Facebook to start syncing up your Facebook Friends with your iPhone Contacts
  • facebook4.jpg
  • Your Facebook Friends information should start downloading from the Facebook server and syncing up with Address Book on your iPhone to keep the contact information of your friends up to date.
  • Facebook5.jpg

Now that you’ve pulled down the latest contact information from Facebook to your iPhone you can open up Address Book and see the changes to your contacts. Many of your Friends Contact information will include their latest profile picture on Facebook as well as a “website” link to their Facebook Profile.

Google Wave On the iPhone

by Dan

When Google Wave invites originally started going out I was very disappointed that I wasn’t included in the initial fun. I had signed up to be included in invites only minutes after Google announced their in-development Wave product. It, however, seems that I wasn’t the only one and I didn’t get an initial invite.

Be sure to check out additional information about the product and Find Out All There Is To Know About Google Wave.

That has all changed recently as a Google Wave invite managed to find its way to my inbox. As soon as I saw it I quickly signed up and started playing away with the features of Googles “game changing” product. While the product is still in its “preview” or pre-beta stage, it has a lot of potential. I was impressed with how very few page loads are required while using the software.

After I got a feel for how things work with Google Wave, I realized that these cutting edge products are only going to be as powerful as they are functional on mobile devices like the iPhone. So, as anyone playing with a new technology would do, I grabbed my iPhone to see exactly how Google Wave works on the iPhone.

Safari 4, Google Wave, and the iPhone

I was confident that Google Wave would work on the iPhone since Safari is the native browse on the phone. However, when wave.google.com first loaded in my Safari browser on the iPhone I was surprised to see the screen listed below. Google was telling me that my browser wasn’t supported… or was it?

I notice the “go ahead” link and decided to continue at my own peril. What I expected was the Google Wave interface that was developed for the computer, not for mobile devices like the iPhone, but was quickly surprised when the page finished loading. Google obviously understands the importance of mobile software as it appears their development efforts include simultaneous development of their mobile interface as their standard computer based one.

With a fully functional interface, I quickly started testing out the various aspects of the sites. Contacts worked as normal, I could quickly pull up information about individuals on my Contact list.

Starting a wave was a touch away and the notes I added on the iPhone instantly appeared in my version of Google Wave running on my iMac. You’ll notice that invitations available in the screen shot below.

Get Your Google Wave Invite

Infact, I have 14 invites to send out. With Google Wave, they’re not instant invites, but ones that they’ll send out in “waves” to allow others to quickly start communicating with their friends and family.

To help get the Maciverse community to Google Wave, I’ll be randomly selecting 14 individuals from those who subscribe by email to the site. If you’re interested in getting an invite, subscribe by email by entering your email address in the box listed at the top of the site. in 1 week from today, we’ll randomly select 14 email subscribers and include them in our Google Wave Invite list.

iPhone MMS

by Dan

Since the iPhone first became available, one of the major weaknesses of the device is that it did not include MMS or Multimedia Messaging Services. MMS is the capability to send video and pictures to other cell phone devices through the phone’s standard text messaging capabilities.

The lack of MMS technology on the iPhone stood out every time someone would send a message with a picture to an iPhone user. The text message would include a link to a website and required a long and complicated login and password to see the image. iPhone users were not particularly interested in this approach.

Earlier this year Apple announced that they had upgraded the software on the iPhone device to be able to send and received MMS messages on an iPhone. But as quickly as everyone rejoiced over the news, they explained that the US network on At&t would have to wait because the cell provider did not have the infrastructure to support mass use of the MMS technology.

iPhone MMS Enabled

The Day has Finally come and gone where At&t decided they could support MMS capabilities on their network of iPhone users. On September 25 iPhone owners could attach their phone to iTunes and get the Provider update that would enable the feature.

If you’re trying to enable the feature through iTunes, be sure to CHECK FOR UPDATES on the phone as it may not automatically check for you. Then it should just take a few seconds for the MMS Capability to be enabled on your phone.

Problems with iPhone MMS

If you’re having any problems getting your iPhone MMS to be available after you finished the update do not worry. Many individuals have had to Restart Their iPhone For the new feature to be available.

After it has been restarted, you can check to see if the update took by opening a new text message. you should see a small picture icon next to the text input field. Press the icon to send a new, or previous selected picture through your iPhone. This feature should also be available for video features at the same location.

Now iPhone users will quickly and easily be sharing pictures and video with all other MMS users. Be sure that your iPhone lens is clean before you start sending out MMS messages.

If you’ve had other problems and are restoring your iPhone Backups, be sure to enable the MMS feature again through iTunes or it will not be enabled on your phone.

iPhone: Create a Home Screen Link

by Dan

When the iPhone was originally released, the only way for developers to create applications that worked with the phone was to do so with a web based program.

These applications would be accessed via Safari and allow users to play games, keep track of to do lists, and many other quick and easy web based solutions.

Developers weren’t very happy with this type of application for a mobile device because it didn’t allow the developer to take advantage of the phone’s hardware. Apple eventually gave in and provided an SDK, but there are still a number of developers that create applications for the iPhone via web based programs (Google’s Gmail, Meebo, etc).

If you have a web based application that you use often and you’d like to access it directly from the iPhone home screen, you can create an iPhone Home Screen Link by following the steps below:

  1. On your iPhone, open Safari and navigate to the web based application or website you’d like to create a link for
  2. Once the site has finished loading, select the “+” at the bottom of the iPhone
  3. iPhoto-1.png
  4. Next, press the Add to Home Screen button
  5. iPhoto.png
  6. Your iPhone should now place a link to the web based application or website on your home screen automatically

Like other iPhone Apps, the link created on the home screen can be move or re-arranged. If the developer has created an iPhone iCon, it will be downloaded and added in place of the standard Safari linked item on the home screen.

Apple iPhone 3G S Fastest iPhone To Date

by Dan

Apple have released the immense new iPhone 3GS – the fastest iPhone to date. With twice the speed, there won’t be any time to waste when sending texts and emails as this new 3GS boasts a whole other level when it comes to firing up applications.

With a phone, iPod and internet access all built into one with thousands of apps to explore, you will be far from twiddling your thumbs.

So, where to start? The 3 megapixel camera combined with autofocus creates high quality photos, or if you would prefer to record a video using the iPhone then go ahead. With an amazing 3.5 inch display, you can be confident that you will be doing your photos and videos justice when it comes to sharing them with your friends and family.

If that wasn’t enough, you now have the option to edit your video footage, so if you want to focus on one section of the film you can get an extra detailed look, and you can change the start and finish points to get your footage spot on and straight to the point.

If you were after more fun on your iPhone then look no further, the app store, specifically for Apple, has apps available to download. You are bound to find something that takes your fancy with thousands of apps to choose from. Some of the latest apps available for the 3GS include voice control, where your iPhone recognises the contacts and music from your iPod, so if you want to make a call or listen to a song, all you have to do is ask.

Cut copy and paste allows for you to copy text from other applications on your iPhone and paste in another, or even from the internet. Voice memo allows for any audio recordings to be captured and then shared with others, from your thoughts, memos or music. A new Nike + Ipod app is all about promoting fitness.

The iPhone has built in Nike + iPod support. Place the Nike and iPod sensor (which is available separately) into your Nike+ shoe and you can start your workout. For the more business aware, ‘Stocks’ shows you charts and other financial information for any stock you choose. When you rotate the iPhone, even more detailed information becomes available.

And one of the most exciting apps coming soon to the iPhone is the TomTom. Now you can use your iPhone to help find your way around with millions of roads and routes stored in the memory. You can be sure never to lose your way again.
