Since the release of the iPhone 3G more and more people are browsing the web in the iPhone Ready version of Safari. It is true that Safari on the iPhone is capable of rendering full web pages but that doesn’t mean that you want your readers to have to wait for your content to load. Luckily, it is quick and easy to take your iWeb Blog and make it iPhone Ready allowing your readers to keep up on your articles while on the go.

To create an iPhone ready “site” of your iWeb blog you’ll need to download the latest version of Dashcode. This can be achieved by installing the free iPhone SDK. Once you’ve installed Dashcode via the free iPhone SDK you’ll be ready to start your iPhone ready iWeb blog creation.

To create an iWeb Blog site for the iPhone:

  1. Open Dashcode and select a Web Application Template for RSS
  2. Dashcode.png

  3. Change the Title of the RSS Feed by clicking on the default entry and allow it to match your sites title
  4. Select Application Attributes

  6. Under Properties, enter the Feed URL of your iWeb RSS feed. You can find this by clicking the RSS feed link on your iWeb site.

  8. Verify that the feed is being pulled correctly by clicking the Run button at the top of Dashcode - This will launch an iPhone Simulator and display your site as it would be viewed on an iPhone. If your feed is working correctly, you’ll see your latest posts displayed in the Simulator

  10. Close the Simulator and return to Dashcode. You can Set your Home Screen Icon (the image that would display on an iPhone Home Screen) or save the site to your Hard Disk. Click Share and then Save to Disk, select the location you’d like to save your iWeb Blog that is now iPhone Ready
  11. Upload the folder that you just created in Dashcode to your web server and save it to within your iWeb folder.

Your site should now be ready for iPhone users to view. Create a link to the folder you just created on your web server on your iWeb Page and let your readers know that they can follow you quickly and easily on their iPhones.

Here is a final product of our test iWeb Blog that is now iPhone Ready.

While adding Google Gadgets to your iWeb site allows you to display articles from sites you visit often, it lacks the capability to allow you to create a custom RSS feed of information most relevant to your site and embed it onto your site to share with your readers.

Fortunately, one of their search competitors has provided a way to combine and customize RSS feeds and also a way easily add them to your iWeb sites.

To create a custom RSS feed that you can add to your iWeb site, navigate to Yahoo Pipes and login with a yahoo account. Once you’ve logged in click “Create a Pipe”. The Pipes customization page will load and allow you to start your custom built RSS feed.

For this tutorial, we’ll create an RSS feed for just Maciverse.com and add a filter to just display information that includes iWeb related articles.

To get started, we’ll need to select our Source. On the left side of the Pipes customization page click sources and then drag the “Fetch Feed” option to the workspace on the right.

We’ve added the source field but we still we need to enter the location of our source. In the open field enter the address of the RSS feed you’d like to pull information from. I entered “http://www.maciverse.com/feed/”.

Next, select Operators on the left and then drag Filter to the workspace. Select Permit for items that match all of the following. In the field below select the Content item from your RSS feed and enter a keyword into the open text field. For this tutorial, select Contains and enter iWeb.

Now that we’ve selected the source and filtered to the specific data that we want we can connect the pipes and see our results.

Save the newly created pipe and click “Back to My Pipes”. You’ll now see the pipes you’ve created. Select the one just created and click on View Results.

Next we want to get the code behind the Pipes we created so we can embed it on our iWeb site. Click the Get as a Badge button.

Select the Embed option to be able to grab the code and apply it to your iWeb site. After clicking on embed copy the code displayed.

We’ve built the pipes for our customized RSS feed and grabbed the code we need. Open iWeb and navigate to the page you’d like to add the customized RSS feed. Select html snippet and add it to the page. In the html snippet page paste in the code we copied from Yahoo pipes.

Once the code has been applied you should be able to see the pipes details on your iWeb site and it should be ready for publishing.

Automator_512.jpgWe often talk about ways to enhance your Mac experience by using automated actions. Additionally, many Maciverse readers have created or continue to create websites with iWeb. With that in mind, I suggest that all iWeb users download and install the iWeb Action Pack for Automator.

With the iWeb Action Pack for Automator you’ll be able to quickly and easily add photos and video to your iWeb site. The action pack includes:

  1. Add Images to Blog
  2. Add Movie Pages
  3. Add Movies to Blog
  4. Create Photo Album
  5. Get Image URL for photos on Page

Each of these will take the media passed into it and create a blog page or normal page with the corresponding information. If you’re a big photo blogger, video blogger, or just want to make it faster and easier to update information on your website, the iWeb Action Pack for Automator is for you.

tuaw.com has reported that due to an error in a JavaScript library that the photo galleries on iWeb pages are not loading correctly.

Luckily there is already a fix for such a problem. You can either download and run a script from macupdate.com or follow the instructions on the Apple Discussion boards.

Be sure to get your galleries up and running so that you can share your photos with all your website visitors.

If you’re an iWeb user then you’ll be glad to know that Jumsoft has released a number of new themes for iWeb. These 10 new themes cover a wide variety of possible uses and look to have a complete look and feel to them.

Jumsoft is currently selling a pack of 10 themes for $69.99 but individual themes can be purchased for $9.99 each. If the themes work as well as they look then that seems to be a fair price.

Head over to Jumsoft to see if they have the iWeb theme you’ve been looking for.
