Augmented Reality Star Wars Arrives on the iPhone

Besides Apple Products two topics that always seem to grab my attention are Augmented Reality… and Star Wars. And now, we have both on the iPhone. Star Wars Arcade Falcon Gunner is an iPhone game that lets you experience being a gunner on the Millennium Falcon. The best part, though, is that THQ Wireless (the developers of the game) built in augmented reality into the app. Now you can experience incoming Tie-Fighters while you’re sitting in your living room.

Falcon Gunner doesn’t have to be experienced with Augmented Reality and can be set to the major battle scenes of Start Wars Episode IV, like first arriving at the Death Star. Personally, I love the Augmented Reality feel. I tested the game out today while sitting shot-gun in a car and on my way to work. It felt like Tie-Fighters were flying around and in and out of the car as we cruised down the highway. Luckily I was able to knock out each wave of incoming fighters.

The best part of Falcon Gunner is its controls. It utilizes the motion detection controls to give you the real sense that you’re sitting in a gunner seat. If a Tie-Fighter cruises past you, you can quickly turn around while holding the phone to lock back in on the attacking Fighter. The game is an experience in itself and the augmented reality features just add extra enjoyment.

You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.

The game is currently only supported on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and 4th Generation+ iPod Touch. While the game will technically run on the iPhone 3G, many people are reporting memory issues and crashes with the app. Having said that, it runs flawlessly on the iPhone 4.

If you haven’t already purchased Falcon Gunner, head over to the iTunes App store and download the game now. You won’t regret it and will find yourself enjoying a hand held game like you’ve never imagined possible.
